Redesigning The Scopio Website

Reimagining a website for Scopio’s platform to reflect a mission where photographers can share images and tell stories about their communities.

Overview

Scopio is an image storytelling platform and marketplace, that I cofounded, where photographers and artists can directly submit images and sell them. The company’s mission is to elevate human stories told by people from underrepresented identities, challenge visual stereotypes, and give opportunities to emerging photographers and artists to get paid for their images.

Design Challenge

We wanted to reimagine Scopio’s platform and marketplace to reflect this mission. We wanted to upgrade our website to move away from the stock photography culture to a more community-centered storytelling platform that represents diverse global narratives. With a team of designers, I led the redesign of a new website to showcase our artist profiles, our improved AI-powered image search, and our new curated collections and stories. With an external team of designers and developers, we co-designed a platform solution that fits the next phase of our company.

Process

User Personas

after conducting short form and long form user interviews for a total of 18 diverse users and uncovering their shared needs, pain pints, and goals, we created descriptions for the different user personas to allow us to prioritize website features that appealed to our target audience.

Information Architecture

Based on user interviews, customer feedback, and our own ambitions for the platform features, we mapped out the user journey and features of the website. It was essential to improve on the flows that were either broken or didn’t have user friendly experiences in the current website. There were many features that were added to this website version that included a more seamless image upload flow for the photographers, more granulate information about the images and more of an emphasis on storytelling.

Wireframes

Once we had the website architecture in place and identified the user personas to target in order to prioritize the main features, we designed the wireframes of the website containing the main components and sections that we wanted to include.

Deliverables

The results were a seamless user experience for photographers and customers on a website that communicates our mission of diverse storytelling, highlighting the artists in our community, and showcasing their work.

AI-based Search

One feature that enabled me to deepen my work in integrating machine learning models in products, was the AI-enhanced image search capability. I worked with our team of machine learning experts and developers to develop this feature using our own natural language processing model off-the-shelf AI solutions.
